NovaSource® adds technical capability with new staff additions: doctorate-level directors of both development and product safety

PHOENIX, Ariz. — July 26, 2017 — NovaSource, the crop protection business unit of Tessenderlo Kerley, Inc. (TKI), has added a new director of development, Sandra Alcaraz, Ph.D., and a new director of product safety, James Cowles, Ph.D.

Dr. Alcaraz will oversee the development of new and existing products, and lead technical initiatives with third party collaborators.

She has more than 20 years’ experience in agricultural research and product development with several Arizona-based companies, including SenesTech, The Gowan Company, and Research Designed for Agriculture. Throughout her career, she has led projects to uncover, analyze and develop leading-edge pesticides and other products.

A Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Alcaraz earned her doctoral and master’s degrees in entomology from The Ohio State University and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia. She is fluent in both English and Spanish.

Dr. Cowles brings more than 20 years of pesticide regulatory experience with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) to the NovaSource team.

While at the USEPA, he served as acting director of the Environmental Fate and Effects Division in the Office of Pesticide Programs. Dr. Cowles was responsible for ecological risk and drinking water exposure assessments for new chemical registration in the U.S. and worked on policy areas such as synergy, endocrine disrupters and endangered species assessments for new chemical registration.

He was the agency toxicologist for the WSDA, serving as a science and policy advisor to the director of agriculture regarding environmental and pesticide regulatory issues. While at WSDA, Dr. Cowles was named to the National Academy of Science panel for Assessing Risks to Endangered and Threatened Species from Pesticides.

He earned a doctoral degree in environmental toxicology from Clemson University and a bachelor’s degree in aquatic toxicology from Western Washington University.

“With the addition of Dr. Alcaraz and Dr. Cowles, our team continues to grow in its scope of experience and our ability to enhance our customers’ experiences with the NovaSource product line,” said Jonathan Akins, Ph.D., DABT, head of crop protection for NovaSource.

Both Dr. Alcaraz and Dr. Cowles are based out of the NovaSource headquarters in the TKI corporate office in Phoenix, Arizona.
